WHAT IS KARATE?
Karate is a Japanese martial art that focuses on striking techniques—such as punches, kicks, knee strikes, and open-hand blows—combined with blocks, footwork, and defensive movements.
It is comprised of:
Kihon – basics (stances, strikes, kicks, blocks)
Kata – pre-arranged forms or sequences that simulate combat
Kumite – sparring, applying techniques in a controlled fight
Beyond physical skills, karate emphasizes discipline, respect, perseverance, and self-improvement, aiming to develop both body and mind.
While there are many styles of karate, here at Kenbukan Karate, we teach Shitō-ryū, one of the four main styles of karate.

Shitō-Ryū KARATE HISTORY
Shitō-ryū (糸東流) is one of the four major styles of Japanese karate, founded by Kenwa Mabuni (1889–1952). Mabuni studied under two legendary Okinawan masters: Ankō Itosu, who taught the fast, powerful Shuri-te tradition, and Kanryō Higaonna, master of the rooted, circular Naha-te style. Wanting to honor both teachers, Mabuni combined their teachings into a single system. The name “Shitō” comes from the first characters of their names: Shi (Itosu) and Tō (Higaonna).
What makes Shitō-ryū unique is its balance of hard and soft techniques. Students learn both the long, fast movements of Shuri-te and the strong, breathing-centered methods of Naha-te, giving the style adaptability for both long- and close-range defense.
Today, Shitō-ryū remains true to Mabuni’s vision: preserving tradition while training the body and mind. It is a style rich in history, technique, and philosophy, making it ideal for students of all ages who want a balanced and comprehensive martial art.
